Minimum wage, contracts and the BCEA basics every SA employer must meet.
Key facts
South African labour law protects employees strongly. Compliance from day one avoids costly CCMA disputes.
National minimum wage
From 1 March 2026 the national minimum wage is R30.23 per ordinary hour worked. Some sectors have their own determinations — always pay at least the applicable rate.
Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA)
Sets the floor on working hours, overtime, leave (annual, sick, family responsibility, parental), and notice periods. You must give employees written particulars of employment (a contract).
Fair process (LRA)
The Labour Relations Act governs dismissals — you need a fair reason and a fair procedure. Unfair dismissals go to the CCMA and can be expensive. Keep records and follow due process.
