Most small businesses only need a free sworn affidavit — not an expensive certificate.
Key facts
B-BBEE status is often needed to tender, get funding or become a supplier — but many small businesses over-spend here.
Affidavit (most small businesses)
Exempt Micro Enterprises (EMEs) and many Qualifying Small Enterprises (QSEs) can confirm their B-BBEE level with a simple sworn affidavit stating annual turnover and black-ownership percentage. It’s signed before a commissioner of oaths and is free.
Certificate
A verified B-BBEE certificate from an accredited agency is needed for larger businesses or where a client specifically requires verification. It costs money and takes time.
Tip: Start with the affidavit. Only pay for a certificate if a specific tender or funder demands one.
