💡 What is a Church NPC?
A Church NPC (Non-Profit Company) is the legal structure for registering a church, ministry, or religious organisation with CIPC in South Africa. Unlike a Pty Ltd, an NPC cannot distribute profits to members and must use all income for its religious and charitable objectives. Furthermore, with SARS tax exemption approval, your church pays no income tax on tithes, offerings, and donations received from members.
Why Register Your Church as an NPC with Tax Exemption?
Build your ministry on a solid legal and financial foundation.
🛡️
Tax-Exempt Tithes & Offerings
Your church pays no income tax on tithes, offerings, and donations received. As a result, all funds can be used for your ministry’s religious and charitable purposes.
💰
Income Tax Exemption
Approved churches are exempt from income tax on tithes, offerings, donations, and income from religious activities. Furthermore, you may also qualify for exemption from donations tax and estate duty.
⚖️
Legal Entity Status
NPC registration provides your church with its own legal identity, separate from pastors and members. Consequently, this includes limited liability protection for directors.
🏦
Open Bank Accounts
Registered NPCs can open business bank accounts in the church name. In addition, you can accept EFTs, card payments, and manage funds professionally.
🤝
Attract Committed Donors
Registered churches with proper governance attract donors who value transparency and accountability. Therefore, formal registration builds credibility in your community.
✅
Credibility & Trust
Formal registration demonstrates accountability and good governance. As a result, it builds trust with members, donors, and the broader community your ministry serves.

Church NPC Registration Process
Our streamlined 4-step process to get your church fully registered.
1
Church Details & Name Reservation
First, we collect your church details and director information. Then, we reserve your church name with CIPC and draft your Memorandum of Incorporation (MOI) with all required non-profit and religious clauses.
2
CIPC NPC Registration
Next, we submit your NPC registration application to CIPC with the MOI and all required documents. Generally, your church receives its NPC registration number and certificate within 7–14 business days.
3
SARS Tax Exemption Application
Once NPC registration is complete, we apply for tax exemption with SARS using Form EI2. Additionally, we submit your NPC certificate, MOI, and proof of religious activities for approval.
4
Tax Exemption Approval
Finally, SARS reviews and approves your tax exemption application. As a result, you receive your tax exemption reference number and your church becomes exempt from income tax on tithes, offerings, and donations.
Church NPC Registration Requirements
What you need to register your church as an NPC:
👥 Minimum 3 directors — Incorporators who cannot be related
🪪 ID copies of all directors — South African ID or passport
📍 Proof of address — For each director (not older than 3 months)
🏢 Physical church address — Registered address for the church
⛪ Church name — Must end with “NPC”
📋 Religious activities — Description of church objectives
⛪ Church Naming Guidelines
Your church name must end with “NPC” (Non-Profit Company), be unique and not similar to existing names, and not contain restricted words without approval. For example: “Grace Fellowship Church NPC”, “New Life Ministries NPC”, “Kingdom Worship Centre NPC”.
Important: Churches Do Not Qualify for Section 18A
Please note that churches do not qualify for Section 18A approval. Here’s what this means for your ministry:
✅ A church CAN be tax-exempt — the church itself does not pay income tax
❌ However, the church CANNOT issue tax-deductible donation receipts to donors
❌ Therefore, donors CANNOT claim their tithes or offerings as tax deductions
Section 18A is reserved for organisations conducting approved public benefit activities such as welfare, education, healthcare, and poverty relief. Unfortunately, religious activities alone do not meet SARS requirements for Section 18A status.

Frequently Asked Questions About Church NPC Registration
General Questions
What is a Church NPC in South Africa?
A Church NPC (Non-Profit Company) is the legal structure for registering a church, ministry, or religious organisation with CIPC in South Africa. Unlike a Pty Ltd, an NPC cannot distribute profits to members and must use all income for its religious and charitable objectives. As a result, it provides your church with full legal entity status and limited liability protection.
How much does Church NPC registration cost?
Our Church NPC Only package costs R990 for CIPC registration without tax exemption. The complete Church NPC with SARS Tax Exemption package costs R4,780 and includes CIPC NPC registration, Memorandum of Incorporation, SARS tax exemption application, and all compliance documentation. Note: Churches do not qualify for Section 18A.
Can my church issue tax-deductible donation receipts?
No, churches do not qualify for Section 18A approval. While your church can obtain SARS tax exemption (the church itself does not pay income tax), donors cannot claim their tithes or donations as tax deductions. Section 18A is reserved for organisations conducting approved public benefit activities like welfare, education, or healthcare.
How long does Church NPC registration take?
Church NPC registration with CIPC typically takes 7–14 business days. SARS tax exemption approval takes an additional 6–12 weeks after NPC registration. Therefore, the total time is approximately 2–3 months for full completion. Our professional service expedites the process with properly drafted documents to avoid delays.
Tax & Compliance Questions
Do churches pay tax in South Africa?
Churches with approved SARS tax exemption are exempt from income tax on tithes, offerings, donations, and income from religious activities. They may also qualify for exemption from donations tax, estate duty, transfer duty, and skills development levy. However, without tax exemption, churches may be liable for certain taxes.
What is the difference between Church NPC and NPO?
A Church NPC is registered with CIPC under the Companies Act and provides full legal entity status with limited liability. A Church NPO is registered with the Department of Social Development under the NPO Act. Our package includes NPC with SARS tax exemption, which is sufficient for most churches. NPO can be added later if needed for government funding.
Can a foreign pastor register a church in South Africa?
Yes, foreign nationals can be directors of a South African NPC. However, at least one director should have a South African ID or valid work permit for banking and compliance purposes. We can guide you through the specific requirements for foreign directors during the application process.
