Why Your NPO Annual Report Matters
In short, submitting on time keeps your NPO registered and your funding doors open.
🛡️
Keep Your NPO Registration
DSD can deregister an NPO that does not submit its annual reports. As a result, you lose your NPO status and must go through reinstatement to get it back.
💰
Stay Eligible for Funding
Government departments, the National Lotteries Commission and corporate CSI funders check your DSD compliance status. Consequently, a missing report can cost you a grant.
🤝
Build Donor Trust
A compliant NPO shows donors that you manage funds responsibly. In addition, your annual report doubles as a record of your impact for funding proposals.
🏦
Smooth Banking
Banks increasingly ask for proof of NPO compliance when opening accounts or updating signatories. Therefore, up-to-date reports prevent frustrating delays.
🔍
FATF & FICA Compliance
Since South Africa’s greylisting, DSD has tightened NPO oversight. Read more about the NPO compliance crackdown.
📈
Good Governance
Preparing the report each year forces your board to review activities, finances and office bearers. Indeed, it is a simple annual health check for your organisation.
What Goes Into a DSD Annual Report?
In fact, the NPO Act requires these documents every financial year.
💡 Deadline: your NPO annual report is due within 9 months after your financial year-end — for example, a 28 February year-end means a 30 November deadline.
How NPO Annual Report Submission Works
Just three simple steps, because we handle the DSD side for you.
1
Send Your Information
Firstly, send us your NPO number, financial statements, accounting officer’s report and a short summary of your activities for the year via WhatsApp or email.
2
We Prepare & Check
Next, we write or review your narrative report, check that your financial statements and office bearer details meet DSD requirements, and fix any gaps.
3
We Submit to DSD
Finally, we submit the complete annual report to the Department of Social Development and send you proof of submission for your records.

Have these ready to speed up your submission:

Frequently Asked Questions
About NPO Annual Reports
What is an NPO annual report?
An NPO annual report is the set of documents every registered non-profit must submit to the Department of Social Development each year. It includes a narrative report on your activities, your annual financial statements, the accounting officer’s report and your office bearers’ details.
When is the NPO annual report due?
Your report is due within 9 months after the end of your financial year. For example, if your financial year ends on 28 February, the deadline is 30 November of the same year.
Is there a DSD fee to submit?
No. DSD does not charge to submit NPO annual reports. You only pay our once-off service fee: R750 for submission only, or R1,990 for a full annual report prepared and submitted for you.
Compliance Questions
What happens if my NPO does not submit its annual report?
DSD will send a non-compliance notice. If you still do not submit, DSD can deregister your NPO, which affects your funding, banking and credibility. We can help you catch up and apply for reinstatement.
Our NPO had no activity this year. Do we still need to report?
Yes. Every registered NPO must submit an annual report, even if it had little or no activity. In that case, your narrative report explains the position and your financial statements reflect the limited activity.
Do I need audited financial statements?
Not necessarily. The NPO Act requires an accounting officer’s report on your financial statements. However, your constitution, a funder or your PBO status may require a full audit, so check those requirements too.
